Nessie returns to work…

Thanks to the dedication of her owners, careful management, and regualr massages, Nessie has come on leaps and bounds and has now returned to light work -something many thought may never happen. She is enjoying ridden and led walks out a few times a week and her breathing has continued to remain stable.

Nessie is proof that there is hope for COPD/RAO sufferers, no matter how extreme their condition becomes. Contact me for more info.

Colic and Laminitis -Quick tips…

It would seems from hearing from friends and clients that colic and laminitis are absolutely rife at the moment? With the unusually sunny spring we’ve had the grass content must be incredibly rich. So how can we help avoid these worrying times and endless vets bills? Well there’s no single easy solution to either colic or laminitis prevention (if only!), but we can always try the following simple tips:

Avoid long periods of turn out or restrict his grazing area so he can’t be too greedy!
exercise after turn out to encourage all that excess gas to pass as well as keeping them trim
montior your horses weight with a weigh tape
turn out over night rather than during the day
know your horse, spot the signs early
we all hate them but muzzles are a godsend for some horses/owners
concussive induced laminitis is also very possible with the hard ground right now, so be careful where you are exercising in fields etc

Paint A Horse!

A good way to gain a better understanding of where the muscles are on a horse and how they affect his movement, is to paint them on. Use different colours for different muscle groups and then ask someone to lead the horse around so you can see them working. This not only helps you to understand which muscle moves which part of the body, but also how they work together.

Please note these are child friendly paints but it is a good idea to do a skin test first on a small area in case your horse reacts. Grey horses are also ideal.
